Temperature
To indicate temperature, Celsius is used in Europe, while Fahrenheit is used in the USA. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius and 212 degrees Fahrenheit. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, use the following formula: ((°C × 9) / 5) + 32. To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, use: (°F – 32) × 5 / 9.
Weight
The smallest unit of weight in the USA is the ounce (oz). 1 oz is 28.35 g. For larger measurements, use pounds (lbs). 1 lbs is 453.6 g. So 1 kg would be 2.2 lbs.
Liquids
Ounces (oz) are used in the US for liquids. In Europe, mililiters (ml) or deziliters (dl) are usually used. 1 ounce is 29.5 ml. Cups are also used. 1 cup is 200 ml. Of course, there are larger measures, but these are mostly used for cooking.
*Cups are containers that hold different amounts of ingredients. Therefore, the gram conversion for solid ingredients is not always the same for a cup. A table for converting can be found here.
French recipes
While the steps in German and English recipes are displayed in a numbered list, French recipes use “Étape” to indicate the order.
Also, French recipes do not use “dl” as a measure, but “l”, “cl” and “ml” (1 l = 10 dl = 100 cl = 1000 ml).
